First-Person Accounts of Gayatri Mantra Sadhana Practices: An Experiential Data Analysis from Practitioners in India
摘要
Different mantras have been used for spiritual practices across the world since ancient times, especially in India. Among those, Gāyatrī Mantra (GM) is one such mantra that originates in the ancient text of Ṛgveda. This mantra is highly regarded in Vedic literature for its potential benefits to mental well-being and spiritual growth. GM has been traditionally practiced in the Indian subcontinent for centuries. This study aimed to explore the experiences of long-term GM practitioners who had engaged in daily Gāyatrī sādhanā practices for at least 10 years. Data was collected through in-depth, one-on-one, semi-structured interviews with 35 long-term GM practitioners. The interviews were recorded upon participants’ consent and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The emergent themes for the felt experiences were “enhanced cognitive abilities,” “clarity of mind,” “improved emotional balance and resilience,” “changes in mental state,” and “feeling of contentment, bliss, and peace of mind” as a result of the GM practice. Participants reported that when they missed their regular practices, they felt a sense of incompleteness or unfulfillment. However, on resuming it, they reported experiencing a profound sense of contentment and bliss. Participants further reported that in their observations, the factors that influenced the outcomes of their practice were initiation (dīkṣā), devotion, the procedure of mantra chanting, the environment, discipline in daily routine, and diet. They also reported that their experiences evolved over time from having wandering minds to achieving a state of complete mental absorption. Over the years of practice, they reported changes in their lifestyle preferences, thoughts and behavior, mental state, and satisfaction with life. This paper concludes that long-term GM practices have significant mental benefits, as reported by the practitioners, offering valuable insights into its role in enhancing mental wellbeing.
