Embodying Patañjali in a Visual Art Practice: Vibhūti Pāda
摘要
This article explores the transformative journey of artist Melissa Townsend as she engages with Vibhūti Pāda—Book Three of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali—through the medium of visual art. Combining her dharma as a yoga scholar with her dharma as a painter, Townsend published a translation, commentary, and an original painting for each of the sūtras for Books One and Two (Samādhi Pāda and Sādhana Pāda). Townsend’s artistic process is not intended to illustrate the sūtras but rather to allow their meaning to inform her paintings in an intuitive and unpredetermined way. Turning her focus to Vibhūti Pāda presented unique challenges due to (a) its preponderance of content on the siddhis—translated here as “remarkable manifestations”— accruing to the Yogi adept and (b) the relative lack of scholarly attention paid to Vibhūti Pāda. Through her artistic process, Townsend experienced a radical shift in understanding the nature and purpose of the siddhis. This article provides insights into the dilemmas and rewards of working with Vibhūti Pāda, the role of surrender and self-inquiry in the creative process, and the profound impact of engaging with the teachings of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. Townsend’s artwork, excerpted throughout, serves as a visual meditation on the transformative power of Yoga and offers a unique perspective on the integration of art and spirituality.
