Management of field pea powdery mildew using fungicides and host resistance in North Shewa, central highlands of Ethiopia

Field pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a self-pollinating annual legume and the primary pulse crop after faba bean in North Shewa. However, powdery mildew significantly limits field pea yields in this region. This study aimed to evaluate four field pea cultivars and four chemical fungicides including control against powdery mildew at two sites, Debre Berhan and Debre Meaza, in 2021. The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) (%-days) was considerably (P < 0.001) affected by interaction effect of cultivar and chemical fungicide. On average, the highest AUDPC value (868.0%-days) was observed in control plots of the local cultivar, while the lowest AUDPC value (626.5%-days) was recorded in the Burkitu treated with 10% difenoconazole at Debre Berhan. At Debre Meaza, the highest AUDPC value (756.0%-days) was also found in control plots of the local cultivar, whereas the lowest AUDPC value (485.3%-days) was noted in Burkitu cultivar treated with 25% triadimefon. Significantly lower yields and higher disease parameters were recorded at Debre Berhan compared to Debre Meaza. Yield loss was considerably (P < 0.01) influenced by main effect at cultivar and chemical fungicide at both locations Yield losses in the local cultivar ranged from 10.8% to 54.2% among chemical treatments compared to the most protected plots treated with 10% difenoconazole at Debre Berhan, and from 9.1% to 45.5% at Debre Meaza. The application of 10% Difenoconazole and 25% Triadimefon proved highly effective. Additionally, Burkitu and Adi cultivars showed moderate resistance to powdery mildew. Therefore, applying 10% Difenoconazole and 25% Triadimefon fungicides to Burkitu and Adi cultivars are recommended for managing powdery mildew epidemics in field pea.
