Assessment of genetic variability for rice yellow mottle virus resistance in newly introduced rice (Oryza sativa L.) germplasm in Ghana

Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) is a significant rice disease in Africa. This study evaluated 98 rice (Oryza sativa) lines introduced to Ghana through the Korea-Africa Food and Agricultural Cooperative Initiative (KAFACI) and four control lines for RYMV resistance. We also assessed genetic variation, heritability, and genetic advance. A 6 × 17 lattice design experiment with four replications was conducted in pots at Fumesua, Kumasi. Three replications were artificially inoculated with RYMV, while the fourth replication served as a control. Disease incidence and severity were assessed, and data were log-transformed for ANOVA. Principal component analysis determined the contribution of RYMV disease and agronomic traits to germplasm variation. The ANOVA revealed significant differences among lines for measured traits. The lines were classified as follows: 16 (16.33%) resistant, 37 (37.76%) moderately resistant, and 45 (45.92%) susceptible. Notably, lines KF210055 and KF210031 exhibited high resistance to RYMV while maintaining appreciable yields. High genetic advance as a percentage of the mean (GAM) was observed for grain yield (73.58%) with high broad-sense heritability (88.0%). RYMV severity also showed high broad-sense heritability (97.0%) and GAM (54.42%). The first three principal components accounted for 62.70% of the total variation, with PC1 contributing 29.10%. Grain yield (-0.463) and severity (0.352) had the highest loadings for agronomic and pathological traits, respectively. This study’s findings, including the identification of promising lines KF210055 and KF210031, will facilitate breeding RYMV-resistant varieties in Ghana and beyond.
