Use of microbial agents and botanicals for the management of potato dry rot caused by Fusarium species complex (FSC)

Potato dry rot disease caused by Fusarium species complex significantly affects both the quality and quantity of potato tubers under storage conditions. Several methods are available to manage this disease and among them chemical method is considered as a most effective due to its efficient, quick and desirable response. However, chemical applications possess environmental and health impacts therefore effective alternatives to manage plant diseases are crucial. In this study, a trial was conducted to investigate the biocontrol potential of different microbial biocontrol agents, including Trichoderma harzianum, T. asperellum, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Also, efficacy of methanolic extracts of various plant parts including pomegranate and onion peel, garlic, neem, and citrus leaves against Fusarium isolates was evaluated under in vitro and storage conditions. Results revealed that T. asperellum proved as the most promising species which inhibits the Fusarium growth up to 81.25%, 64.58%, 54.44%, 53.89% and 53.75% in isolates PDR 7.5.2 (F. oxysporum; PP809673), PDR 6E (F. sambucinum; PP776467), PDR 2.2(P) (F. oxysporum; PP809668), PDR 4.3 (F. oxysporum based on cultural and morphological characteristics) and PDR 5.3 (F. sambucinum; PP776465), respectively. While among the botanicals pomegranate peel extract exhibited the highest effectiveness in suppressing Fusarium growth up to 85.58%, 80.08%, 74.75%, 72.58% and 66.5% in PDR 2.2(P), PDR 4.3, PDR 6E, PDR 7.5.2 and PDR 5.3, respectively. These findings suggest a promising role for utilizing Trichoderma species and pomegranate peel extract in the management of Fusarium dry rot in potatoes.
