<p>Spot blotch disease is one of the diseases that was recently detected on lentil in Algeria and worldwide. This research paper presents a comprehensive study on <i>Bipolaris sorokiniana</i>, the causal agent of spot blotch disease in lentils, marking the first characterization of this pathogen isolated from lentil plants globally. The study confirmed the identity of the pathogen through molecular and phylogenetic analysis using concatenated sequences of the ITS and TEF1-α gene regions. Its pathogenicity was evaluated on lentil plants. A morphological characterization was conducted using different culture media, temperatures, and pH. Notably, <i>B. sorokiniana</i> displayed preferences for warm temperatures (30&#xa0;°C), neutral pH (7), and nutrient-rich environments, which are key factors contributing to its ability to induce spot blotch disease. The research findings not only provide crucial diagnostic insights for spot blotch disease of lentils in the fields but also offer valuable knowledge about the pathogen’s behavior, which can be useful for the development of integrated management of the disease, especially in regions where environmental conditions align with the pathogen’s favored parameters. Additionally, the study highlights the potential risk that lentil plants pose as a source of inoculum for <i>B. sorokiniana</i>, which has a broad host range, including cereals like wheat and barley. Consequently, this paper advises against including lentil crops in rotation with cereals to prevent the pathogen’s persistence in agricultural fields.</p>
