Do Pantoea spp. play a vital role in the dynamics of rice bacterial leaf blight disease beside Xanthomonas in Pakistan?

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) accounts for food of more than half of the world’s population. However, its cultivation is threatened by a number of pathogens, particularly the Gram-negative bacterium Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), the causal agent of bacterial leaf blight (BLB). This disease causes 70% of crop losses under severe conditions. This study aimed to explore the bacterial diversity of rice leaves infected by Xoo collected and cultivated across nineteen districts in Punjab Province, Pakistan. With the use of the API 20E kit for biochemical characterization and 16 S rRNA gene sequencing, sixty-six endophytic bacterial strains were isolated and identified. These isolates were classified into three phyla, viz. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. The most dominant genus was Pantoea. Pathogenicity tests revealed that eight isolates, from the genera Xanthomonas, Pantoea, Sphingomonas, Curtobacterium, Staphylococcus, and Pseudomonas, caused necrotic lesions on the inoculated leaves. This study suggested that Pantoea species may play a significant role in the pathogenic dynamics of BLB in Pakistan’s rice crop.
