Evaluation of water quality from tubular wells in Brazil

Water is essential for the maintenance of life and the environment, playing a fundamental role in the functioning of various bodily functions. However, population growth combined with improper waste disposal has intensified water degradation, contamination, scarcity, and the demand for alternative sources. This study evaluated the water quality of three wells intended for noble use in rural communities in Brazil through physical, chemical, and bacteriological analyses. Samples were collected at two sampling points, the reservoir and consumption outlet, appropriately conditioned, and transported to the laboratories. The analyzed parameters followed the physical, organoleptic, and bacteriological potability standards established by Ministry of Health Ordinance GM/MS No. 888, of May 4, 2021, and the results were compared with the maximum permissible value. All samples complied with the reference values for physical parameters. In contrast, regarding chemical parameters, only samples from well 2 exceeded the reference values for hardness (130.17%) and chloride (17.2%), characterizing the source as saline and requiring prior correction. Temporary hardness in all samples was predominantly attributed to calcium bicarbonate (Ca(HCO₃)₂). Bacteriological analysis revealed the presence of total and thermotolerant coliforms in most samples. Biochemical assays identified Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas sp., Salmonella ssp., and Enterococcus faecalis, with E. coli detected in 75% of the samples, indicating fecal contamination and rendering the water unsuitable for human consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt appropriate treatments for the removal of these pathogenic bacteria, so that the water meets the reference values defined by the Ministry of Health.
