摘要

Water conservation is critical for sustainable development, particularly in water-scarce regions like rural Iran. This study integrates emotional variables into the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine the cognitive and non-cognitive determinants of water conservation intentions and behaviors among rural households. Data from 226 Iranian rural households was collected through a questionnaire survey. The findings of the structural equation modeling showed that the proposed model can explain 25% and 33% of the variation in water conservation intentions and behaviors, respectively. Based on the results, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control (PBC) were significantly related to water conservation intentions. In addition, water conservation intentions and PBC were significantly related to water conservation behaviors. Findings also highlight the importance of emotions in predicting water conservation intentions and behaviors through indirect effects on them mediated by PBC and subjective norms. These findings highlight the importance of both cognitive and emotional factors in predicting water conservation intentions and behaviors, providing practical insights for policymakers and researchers alike.
