Drainage flow module as a determining factor in assessing the effectiveness of drainage hydrological action

The article describes the drainage module, which has a decisive influence on the creation and functioning of drainage systems (constructive, technological, regime, economic, environmental, etc.). For its calculation, existing empirical, analytical, water-balance methods are used or according to recommendations without sufficient economic and environmental justification, which does not meet the requirements. Our research has determined that the drainage flow modules are variables related to climatic conditions, the type of crops grown, soil and relief of the drained area. Based on the generalized results of theoretical and experimental studies, we have improved the analytical method for substantiating the design drainage module, which, unlike existing methods, takes into account: the zonal nature of the conditions for surface runoff formation, the level of productivity of the grown agricultural crops regarding various levels of drainage efficiency, the thermal and moisture conditions of the design (spring and vegetation) periods of drainage operation, and the meliorative effectiveness of the terrain in terms of slopes and surface elevation changes in the drained area. On drained lands of Western Polissya, Ukraine, for example, it has been shown that drainage flow modules, depending on multiple variables of natural agro-ameliorative conditions of a real object, can vary in a significant range from 0.30 to 0.92 l/s·ha. At the same time, their values, as related to the identified key influencing factors, significantly differ from traditionally accepted calculated values, which determines the need to consider this aspect when developing projects for the reconstruction, construction, and operation of such facilities.
