Crystalline aquifer characterization using vertical electrical sounding in Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa district, Ghana
摘要
The crystalline aquifer in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa district was characterized using hydrogeological and VES data to increase the success rate of borehole drilling. Three to seven geoelectric layers underlay the study area. They include dry soil, clay materials, highly weathered rocks, moderately weathered rocks, fractured rocks, and competent basement rocks. About 14.75% of the area showed high groundwater potential, 78.69% showed medium, 4.92% showed low, and 1.64% showed very low. About 98.36% of the area showed high groundwater potential based on the transverse resistance, electrical anisotropy, and aquifer protection capacity. About 90.1% of the area showed weak Aquifer protection capacity which means the overburden facilitates easy water flow to the water table. The area showed moderate-to-high groundwater potential based on the geophysical investigation. The hydraulic conductivity, transmissivity, specific capacity, and yield range were 2.2–125.3 m/day, 20.9–375.8 m2/day, 1.6–118.9 m3/day/m, and 12–90 l/min, respectively. The hydrogeological data revealed the area mainly has moderate-to-high groundwater potential. However, the overburden rocks do not naturally protect the groundwater from contaminated fluids due to the low aquifer protective capacity. Therefore, it is necessary to safeguard the groundwater from potential contamination caused by galamsey operations, inappropriate waste disposal, inadequate pesticide application, etc. There was a good agreement between the geophysical and hydrogeological data interpretations. The wide variations of geophysical and hydrogeological data revealed a complex and heterogeneous hydrogeological environment which is a characteristic nature of a typical crystalline terrain like the study area.
