Assessment and identification of potential of ground water potential zones at industrial coastal location using remote sensing, GIS and SWAT

摘要

The coastal areas of India are densely populated, and groundwater is a crucial source of water supply for various uses. Most of the oil refineries and industries are situated in coastal areas, causing soil and groundwater contamination as a result of possible petroleum product leaks. The environmental effect of such activities can be highly negative, necessitating urgent remediation and the implementation of adequate preventive measures. In this study, the assessment and identification of ground water potential zones for recharge have been conducted on a GIS platform using various thematic layers and the SWAT analysis tool at HPCL, Mumbai Refinery, situated in a coastal area. Groundwater potential zones are categorized into four zones: very good, good, moderate, and poor. Recharge and discharge capacity have been calculated using SWAT simulation. The implementation of this analysis and decision-making software expected to promote sustainable water management for Mumbai refinery and industries situated in coastal areas by installing rainwater harvesting systems at locations with good recharge zones.
