Mitigating seismic effects on frame structures with inerter system

摘要

This paper examines the efficacy of incorporating an inerter-based system in reducing the seismic vulnerability of framed structures. Among the various strategies utilized for seismic response mitigation, one method is to incorporate structural vibration control devices that either absorb or dissipate energy and vibrations due to seismic or wind loads. One of the latest advancements is the use of an inerter, a two-port mechanical device that has gained widespread acceptance in recent years. This study focuses on one such inerter-based system called Tuned Inerter Damper (TID) and its efficacy in mitigating seismic response in frame structures. This study expands on the application of TID to mitigate resonance, identifies optimal placement strategies for TID in multi-story buildings, and examines the impact of parameter variations on TID effectiveness. The findings revealed that a precisely calibrated TID significantly reduces displacement responses under resonant conditions in multi-story frames and successfully diminishes peak displacements caused by earthquake excitations.
