摘要

Motivated by global issues and the specific context of the Philippines, this study progresses through two interconnected phases. The first phase aims to formulate an eco-rational Philosophy for Children (P4C) and check its appropriateness within the Philippine educational landscape. This eco-rational approach seeks to transcend false dichotomies, particularly the distinctions between the I and the other, as well as between humans and nature. Drawing inspiration from Thornton’s concept of eco-rational education, the formulation establishes the philosophical concepts and principles, especially the notion of kapwa (shared identity), necessary to bring this educational vision to fruition. The second phase further develops this formulation by proposing that N.V.M. Gonzalez’s “Children of the Ash-Covered Loam” serves as a suitable philosophical fictional story for the eco-rational P4C. By reading the story through the lens of a kapwa-oriented perspective, the proposed formulation in this study presents a global-local response to addressing the ecological issues contemporary society confronts.
