<p>The term “tentante” has been popularly used to refer to women who seek motherhood through pregnancy but who, despite the efforts made towards this goal, have not yet been successful in their reproductive trajectories. In this trajectory, the woman finds herself at a point of tension between being and not being a mother, since even though she often recognizes herself as prepared to exercise motherhood, the involuntary absence of children prevents her from assuming this role.The aim of this study is to analyze the affective-semiotic dynamics of infertile women throughout their reproductive trajectories marked by successive attempts at pregnancy. This is a qualitative study of multiple cases and of a longitudinal nature. The data was analyzed in the light of the theoretical perspective of the Cultural Psychology of Semiotic Dynamics. This article analyzes the case of one of the participants, identified by the fictitious name of Marta, a 38 years old clinical psychologist who had been trying to conceive for five years. Throughout this journey, she faced five pregnancy losses and went through cycles of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Marta engaged in a constant dialog with many others, especially specialists, trying to make sense of successive losses and not having children. In this winding path, full of adversities, Marta resisted towards her dream of becoming a mother, co-constructing meaning for an experience marked by loss and pain.</p>
