Unaccompanied Refugee Children’s Aspirations: Striving for a Better Life in Host Countries

In this study, we focused on understanding the aspirations and recommendations of unaccompanied refugee children in host countries, particularly in Jordan. We selected sixteen children based on accessibility and authorization from relevant authorities, prioritizing their privacy and confidentiality. We used a qualitative research methodology, conducting semi-structured interviews to gather the children’s experiences and viewpoints. Our analysis revealed that the children perceive resettlement or family reunification as crucial for their well-being. Economic stability emerged as a key factor, affecting their education and fulfilling higher-order needs. The study also highlighted the lack of effective psychosocial support services and the limited effectiveness of social workers. In conclusion, our findings emphasize the importance of addressing economic stability, overcoming education barriers, and enhancing psychosocial support for unaccompanied refugee children. Additionally, the study suggests a need for a more comprehensive and tailored approach to supporting this vulnerable population and recommends that policy and intervention strategies align with the children’s aspirations to ensure sustainable positive outcomes.
