Rache und Verzeihen – (k)ein Gegensatz? Eine Replik auf Maria-Sibylla Lotter
摘要
In her article ‘On the function of “small” revenge in processes of moral restoration—Why forgiveness and revenge are not always opposites’, Maria-Sibylla Lotter argues that revenge can be helpful to the practice of forgiveness and therefore does not always have to stand in the way of forgiveness. This thesis is tested for plausibility in the present replica. After outlining the essential argumentative steps of the reference text (1), it is reconstructed what exactly the contrast between forgiveness and revenge is supposed to be (2). The role of revenge in the context of asymmetrical power structures is then considered and its ethical acceptability is questioned (3). Lastly, the conclusion summarises the main findings and identifies open questions that require further investigation (4).
