Adolescents’ Access to, Engagement With, and Benefits From Recreational Open Spaces: A Gendered Perspective From India
摘要
With rapid urbanization and lifestyle changes, adolescents are increasingly detached from natural environments, raising significant public health concerns. This study investigates the interrelationships among adolescents’ objective and subjective opportunities for Recreational Open Space (ROS) accessibility, ROS usage, and associated benefits through a gender-sensitive lens, focusing on Bhopal, India. Data were collected using a Public Participation GIS (PPGIS) online geo-questionnaire from 313 adolescents. To analyze these dynamics, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed, providing a robust framework to capture multiple interdependencies. The gender-based analysis revealed distinct variations in factors shaping ROS use. Proximity, safety, amenities, thermal comfort, and physical activity equipment were stronger determinants for male adolescents, whereas positive neighbourhood perceptions, well-maintained spaces, and organized activities were more influential for females. The findings provide empirical evidence to guide green space managers and policymakers in designing age- and gender-responsive strategies to enhance adolescents’ access to and benefits from recreational open spaces.
