Land Use/Land Cover Spatiotemporal Change Detection Using Landsat, Sentinel and SPOT Imageries

This article examines the effectiveness of remote sensing (RS) and GIS for monitoring spatiotemporal variations in land use and land cover (LU/LC) along the Egyptian Red Sea coast. The study employed a methodology utilizing Sentinel-2 and high-resolution SPOT imagery, revealing significant changes in infrastructure, tourism and coastal areas. Notably, analysis of Sentinel-2 data from 2016 to 2022 demonstrated an increase in residential areas versus bare lands. Moreover, Landsat images (1987 and 2000) allowed detecting areas of infilling along the coast at and north Hurghada city including resorts, water bodies, and infrastructures. Furthermore, the integration of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) Coherent Change Detection (CCD) data derived from Sentinel-1, provided valuable insights into surface degradation and complemented the analysis of optical data. The overall findings revealed the important role of RS and GIS in supporting sustainable land management practices and understanding the impact of human activities on the coastal environment.
