Mapping Potential Groundwater Zones in the Watershed of Oued Agrioun in Northern Algeria Using GIS and AHP Techniques

Population growth and increasing agricultural and industrial needs are driving up water consumption in the Oued Agrioun watershed. Given the significant increase in groundwater exploitation, it is necessary to identify groundwater potential zones (GWPZ). The present study combines an innovative geographic information system (GIS) approach with an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to model potential groundwater zones. The weighted assessment methodology is based on nine thematic layers combined to identify potential groundwater sites, classified into four categories. According to its different surface areas, the region has very good potential (0.29%), good potential (18.52%), moderate potential (76.35%), and low potential (4.83%). We use the yields from 45 wells to validate the potential groundwater zone map by applying the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and area under curve (AUC) methods. This approach assesses the model’s ability to accurately predict groundwater-rich zones based on real field data. The AUC score for the AHP approach indicates an accuracy of 0.8 (80% prediction), rating the validation method as very good according to standard criteria. These findings could provide crucial information for the planning and management of water resources in the Oued Agrioun watershed. This approach would help guide decisions on agricultural irrigation, land-use planning, and drinking water supply by mapping out zones where groundwater potential is more important. It will also contribute to making more rational, efficient, and sustainable use of this vital resource, particularly in a context of increasing pressure on water resources.
