Sexualität und Intimität in der Langzeitpflege
摘要
Sexuality and intimacy are fundamental aspects of human life. Yet, older people are often perceived as sexually disinterested or asexual. This stereotypical perspective disregards the real needs of many elderly individuals. People living with dementia are no exception—physical and emotional needs persist despite cognitive decline and must not be overlooked in this context. This becomes particularly evident during the transition into residential aged care facilities. Structural conditions within such institutions often hinder the ability to express sexuality and intimacy in a self-determined way. Above all, the lack of privacy has a negative impact on opportunities for maintaining or developing intimate relationships. A targeted intervention in this regard is the creation of protected private spaces that facilitate intimacy and sexual expression. Four partnership models can be identified in residential aged care facilities: two involve existing or newly forming couples, while the other two refer to individuals without a fixed partner. For the latter group, the option of sexual assistance may provide a means to actively express their sexual needs. Overall, sexuality remains a significant resource for maintaining quality of life in the final stages of life and should not be neglected within institutional care.
