摘要

In contrast to many other countries, the prophylactic freezing of eggs in Austria is only permitted with medical indications. Approval and the associated shift in women’s fertility to older ages would fundamentally promote equal rights for women compared to men. The further development of the medical technology of egg freezing makes “social freezing” an essential option in fertility preservation, the risks of which are manageable. However, the process is relatively expensive and could therefore lead to increased socioeconomic inequality. Covering the costs from public funds appears questionable due to the unfavourable cost/benefit ratio.
