Der Behandlungsprozess von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Geschlechtsinkongruenz/Geschlechtsdysphorie in Österreich

With the current societal changes, the topic of gender identity and gender expression is becoming increasingly prominent. Children and adolescents, in particular, often face complex challenges when dealing with their gender identity. Therefore, it is essential that they receive comprehensive support and understanding throughout this process. In Austria, the treatment process for children and adolescents with gender incongruence/gender dysphoria follows a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, aimed at recognizing and addressing the individual needs of children and adolescents. The currently valid guideline, “Recommendations for the treatment process of gender dysphoria in children and adolescents according to the classification in the currently valid DSM and ICD editions” (“Empfehlungen für den Behandlungsprozess bei Geschlechtsdysphorie von Kindern und Jugendlichen nach der Klassifikation in der derzeit gültigen DSM- bzw. ICD-Fassung”), serves as a central point of reference. This guideline provides detailed recommendations for the treatment of children and adolescents and supports professionals in ensuring comprehensive diagnostic assessment and personalized therapy. The goal is to promote the mental and physical health of young people through an integrative care concept, while sustainably improving their well-being and quality of life.
