Lost in translation: students’ struggle to convert their entrepreneurial intentions into behaviour
摘要
Although many students have the intention to start a business, this often does not lead to the actual founding of a business. The reasons for this intention-behaviour gap in entrepreneurship are not yet fully understood. To address this research gap, our study aims at identifying factors that discourage students from taking the initial steps of entrepreneurial activities while studying. Using a quantitative approach, we explore whether students’ tendency to procrastinate, failure to recognize business opportunities or a perceived lack of capacities (partially) explains the gap between entrepreneurial intention and behaviour. Employing a questionnaire survey with a sample of 300 participants from diverse German educational institutions, this study examines potential hindering factors for students’ entrepreneurial behaviour. Our findings highlight the significant relation of students’ entrepreneurial intention, perceived lack of capacities and their inability to recognize business opportunities with their involvement in entrepreneurial activities. In comparison, perceived behavioural control and procrastination were not linked to students’ entrepreneurial behaviour in our study. These results have profound implications for educational policies and support systems, emphasizing the need to enhance entrepreneurial education and bridge the intention-behaviour gap among students more efficiently. Our study not only broadens the understanding of the transformational mechanisms between students’ intentions and actual behaviour, but also offers practical recommendations for fostering entrepreneurial activities within university environments.
