<p>This study utilizes the reliability block diagram (RBD) and fault tree analysis (FTA) models to assess the availability of thermal power plants (TPP). The research evaluates both reliability and availability to measure the performance of TPP systems. Maintenance data from historical records are analyzed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov (K–S) goodness-of-fit test to identify the best-fitting distribution and estimate its parameters. Additionally, subsystem reliability is computed at different time intervals. The findings highlight that the induced draft fan, coal mill, generator oil system, cooling water pump, and boiler feed pump are the most critical components in the plant. To improve overall plant efficiency, targeted measures must be implemented to enhance the reliability and availability of these key systems. The RBD and FTA models are developed to assess the performance of thermal power plants. These models are employed for the subsystems of the plant and availability indices are evaluated. The overall availability of 87.77% is evaluated using the FTA model, while the RBD model predicts 87.72%. Validation against 24 months of actual plant operational data (January 2010 to April 2016) confirms the RBD model’s marginally superior accuracy.</p>
