Precision tea picking ecosystem based on internet of things and edge computing: design and implementation

Tea picking with plucking machines provides the biggest contribution, however actual data such as picking location and picking results from each machine is not yet integrated with the management system, so picking results cannot be monitored in real-time as a reference for daily reports and references for the next picking cycle. The aim of this research is to build a precision tea picking ecosystem with the support of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, edge computing and applications on web and mobile platforms. To support the creation of this ecosystem, the picking process requires an IoT device to obtain data on device identity, identity of the picking team, time and location of picking, speed of picking movement, picking results and duration of picking. This data needs to be sent to the manufacturing department in the plantation area as well as to the central management department within the specified time period. The use of a 3 tier IoT architecture is used to ensure data can be sent completely because it is located in a rural plantation area. By implementing this ecosystem, the picking pattern becomes integrated starting from scheduling, assignment, monitoring, reporting and evaluation as well as follow-up to improve the quality and productivity of tea picking results by producing a more concise picking process stage of 5 process stages compared to the previous 10 stages.
