摘要

Making use of computer applications allows software users to get things done efficiently and effectively. Most software users, however, pay little attention to how their software can be used sustainably. This paper introduces a browser-based, client-side method to inform users of potential carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions before downloading files or streaming media. The method estimates emissions based on file size and server region data, presenting this information to users via a dialog box to support more sustainable decision-making. This allows users to deliberate whether to proceed with the download which could potentially reduce unnecessary data transfer and resource consumption. By integrating this approach, web applications can raise awareness of the environmental impact of digital activities, promoting more sustainable online behavior. Additionally, this method empowers users to manage their digital carbon footprint, contributing to broader efforts to minimize the ecological impact of the growing use of digital technologies.
