A holochain-based IoT-enabled agri-food traceability system: application in the recombined milk supply chain

Blockchain integrated with Internet of Things (IoT)-based traceability systems offer viable solutions for improving food quality and safety with greater transparency and security. However, these systems face challenges such as data redundancy, elevated energy consumption, and extended transaction times. To address these issues, this work proposes a novel Holochain-based IoT-enabled agri-food traceability model. The model is applied to a case study of a recombined milk supply chain in a dairy company. An example website has been developed to serve as the traceability system interface for the dairy company, displaying the services available to all stakeholders in the supply chain. The findings demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of using a Holochain-based model compared to Blockchain in the dairy industry, offering valuable insights for researchers and practitioners seeking to enhance food traceability systems with sustainable and innovative technologies.
