New Perspectives in Intelligent Food Packaging

Annually food waste accounts for nearly one third of overall production globally. It’s not only an economical issue, but also it depletes the environmental resources. The surge of interest in food safety and quality necessitates the development of sensitive and credible analytical procedures. Additionally, to reduce food spoilage during preservation process, certain packaging solutions have been developed such as intelligent packaging. It enhances food product safety, quality and traceability. Innovations in the domain of indicators, sensors and biosensors have been utilized to evaluate the food quality. This high level sensing frame works are typically used to monitor growth of microorganisms, gas generation, and changes in temperature and humidity levels in packaged foods and their implementation in portable equipment’s are discussed in detail. The innovations discussed in this article hold great promise for use in food packaging and bring us closer to being able to track food in real time.
