Role of Sleep in Consolidation of Valence Cue-Induced Prospective Memories: An Event-Related Potential Study

The present study investigates sleep's role in consolidating prospective memories for valence and neutral cues. To better understand the dynamics of the consolidation process, the present study utilises both behavioural and electrophysiological measurement methods.
MethodThe study's volunteers were required to learn valence prospective memory cues and later tested on a prospective memory task that measured the event-related potential for valence and neutral cues. Subjects learnt cues across nights of sleep and deprivation and were tested subsequently.
ResultVolunteers remembered valence better than neutral cues, and this effect was enhanced across nights filled with sleep. Valence supported faster and earlier detection of and improved recognition memory of cues.
ConclusionCue valence plays a decisive role in the consolidation of prospective memories, and this effect is enhanced in the presence of sleep following cue learning.
