Objectives <p>Periodontitis is a chronic, dysbiotic, inflammatory condition that affects the structures supporting the teeth and is multifactorial in nature. Sleep is a complex and vital biophysiological process that plays a role in maintaining mental and physical well-being. Poor sleep is associated with the presence of increased inflammatory biomarkers and decreased immunity. The hormone melatonin has antioxidant characteristics and may contribute to diminishing a chronic condition by reducing oxidative stress. Since inflammation is a feature of both periodontitis and sleep deprivation, research conducted in the recent years brings to fore the contradicting data about this potential association. The motive of this study is to analyse a potential link between quality of sleep and periodontitis.</p> Methods <p>This study involved a total of 75 individuals. Seventy-five individuals were grouped into 3 groups (<i>n</i> = 25 each group) viz. periodontitis, gingivitis and clinically healthy. Status of periodontium was assessed and questionnaires were used for sleep deprivation assessment. Saliva samples were analyzed to determine the melatonin levels.</p> Results <p>In this study, it was noted that, there was a high significance suggestive of a potential link between sleep and periodontitis when periodontal parameters were considered with the salivary melatonin level in gingivitis group followed by periodontitis group and no significance in the healthy group. Whereas the Berlin’s score and Pittsburgh score increased with increasing disease severity.</p> Conclusions <p>Sleep can have a significant impact on periodontal health. Melatonin level in saliva varies with gingivitis and periodontitis severity and sleep deprivation is associated with a greater risk of increasing severity of periodontal disease.</p>
