Analyzing the Effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation on Individuals with Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a sensory–motor disorder characterized by an intense urge to move the legs during rest. Non-pharmacological methods have gained prominence in mitigating the severity of RLS symptoms. This study aims to investigate the effect of transcutaneous electrical stimulation on the severity of RLS symptoms in patients.
MethodsThis clinical trial was conducted on 60 RLS patients who sought treatment at a private healthcare center in the Esfarayen city between 2019 and 2021. The participants were allocated into two groups: the experimental group (30 individuals) received transcutaneous electrical stimulation at a frequency of 100 Hz, while the control group (30 individuals) only had electrodes attached to their limbs, with the lowest possible frequency considered for them.
ResultsThe mean age of the participants was 55.8 ± 8.47 years. The majority of study participants were female (70%) and married (73.3%). Both groups were homogeneous in terms of demographic characteristics. A statistically significant difference was observed in the change in the mean RLS symptom score from day 1 to day 4 in the two intervention and control groups (p < 0.05).
ConclusionIf the results of this study are confirmed by larger sample studies, it may be recommended that RLS patients use a portable transcutaneous electrical stimulation device at home, as prescribed by their treating physician, to alleviate their nightly symptoms.
