<p>Volcanic activity, such as cold lava floods, can significantly alter the physical properties of soil. This study compared soil in rice fields affected and unaffected by the eruption of Mount Marapi. Purposive sampling was used in both affected and unaffected areas. The affected area was divided into upstream (D), midstream (E), and downstream (F), while the unaffected area served as controls (A, B, and C). The data obtained were analyzed using an explorative multivariate analysis approach. The analysis results showed that the physical properties of sample F were similar to samples A and E by up to 76.3%, while sample D was similar to samples B and C by up to 67.5%. In addition, the downstream area tended to have a significantly higher soil porosity level of 68.625% with a significantly lower organic carbon content of 0.424%. This has implications for variations in soil fertility potential and different management strategies for each area. This assessment is expected to provide a scientific basis for planning restoration and optimization of post-eruption rice fields in the affected area. Rehabilitation interventions, such as the addition of organic matter, are essential to restore soil fertility and increase land use potential in volcanic areas affected by cold lava flows (CLF).</p> Graphical Abstract <p>A comparative study of the impact of CLF on rice fields was conducted in Nagari Batu Taba and Bukik Batabuah, in the area around Mount Marapi, West Sumatra. The results showed similarities in properties between zone F and zone E/A with a similarity level of 76.3%. In addition, zone D tends to have similar physical characteristics to zones B/C. The overall impact of CLF is to significantly increase soil porosity, making the soil easy to pass water and has a very low organic matter content. These results can be used as a reference in land restoration and rice field management to obtain maximum land productivity, one of which can be done through the addition of organic materials.</p>
