Sea-Level Rise and Continued Groundwater Extraction: Assessing Awareness and Responses to Coastal Sustainability Threats among Undergraduates in Lagos

The combined impacts of ongoing groundwater extraction and relative sea-level rise pose significant challenges to coastal sustainability, particularly in a rapidly growing city like Lagos. Addressing these interconnected issues requires both scientific understanding and widespread public engagement, with university undergraduates representing a critical stakeholder group in addressing these challenges. Guided by the Knowledge-Attitude-Behaviour (KAB) framework, this study evaluated students’ awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and behavioural dispositions toward groundwater depletion and sea-level rise across five higher education institutions in Lagos. A cross-sectional survey of 3,800 students was conducted, and data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including ANOVA and Welch’s test, to assess disciplinary and institutional differences. Findings revealed significant gaps in awareness and knowledge, with mean scores of 2.61 and 2.63 on a five-point Likert scale, indicating generally low understanding of the link between groundwater extraction and sea-level rise. Over 50% of the respondents disagreed or remained neutral on items regarding this link, while scores for motivation and personal action were similarly low, averaging between 2.64 and 2.68. Inferential analyses showed no statistically significant differences in awareness across faculties (F = 1.654, p = 0.142) or institutions (Wilks’ Lambda = 0.994, F = 0.899, p = 0.605). These results underscore the need for targeted educational interventions and curricular reforms that incorporate sustainability actions into academic programmes. Consistent with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 11, 13, and 14, this study advocates for institution-led awareness campaigns and student-focused initiatives to foster informed and sustained action towards groundwater use and coastal resilience.
