Integrated Assessment of Weathering and Pollution in Soils of Peninsular Gneissic Complex of Central Karnataka, India

The paper presents geochemistry of soil profiles developed over gneisses and granites of peninsular gneissic complex to understand the weathering processes and soil pollution. The ratio plots of SiO2/Al2O3 are 2.74 to 4.88 for gneisses and 2.57 to 5.95 for granites and Al2O3/TiO2 are 12.94 to 35.32 for gneisses and 9.88 to 49.48 for granites. Rb/K2O and Chondrite—REE normalized pattern suggested felsic to intermediate upper continental crustal rock sources. Enrichment factor (EF) values (0.2 to 10.5) indicate moderate to severe pollution by As, while other metals show negligible to minor contamination. The ecological risk (ER) values for As ranges from 25.6 to 163.7, with an average of 58.2, indicating low to high ecological risk by As. The ER values of other heavy metals are less than 40, indicating low ecological risk. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) ranged from 50.7 to 204.6 in gneissic profiles and 35.7 to 100.5 in granites with an average of 94.9 and 61.1 indicating moderate to high risk in gneissic soil and low to considerable ecological risk category in granitic soil.
