Multitemporal Assessment of Ecosystem Service Values and Carbon Sequestration in a Protected Ecosystem: A Case Study from Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary in Jharkhand, India

The Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, rich in biodiversity, is located in the industrial region of the Chhotanagpur Plateau and is experiencing significant ecological degradation due to human activity. This study aims to analyze the spatio-temporal changes in land use land cover, ecosystem service value, and static carbon storage over the periods of 1987, 2005, and 2024. The satellite imagery, various ecosystem service valuation units, the InVEST model, and carbon pool data are used to carry out the research. The study reveals a total reduction of 29.68% in vegetation cover, with agricultural land and built-up areas increasing annually by 0.96 and 5.36%, respectively. These changes led to a decrease in ecosystem service values from 111.47 million USD in 1987 to 109.06 million USD in 2005, and subsequently to 104.47 million USD by 2024. Correspondingly, total carbon storage also declined from 3.032 teragrams in 1987 to 2.471 teragrams in 2005, decreasing further to 2.382 teragrams by 2024. The estimated economic loss from reduced carbon storage over this period is 119.71 million USD. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the value of ecosystem services of the sanctuary shows relative inelasticity to changes in proxy biomes or ecological units. Moreover, hotspot analysis using the Getis-Ord Gi* method identified 9.67% of the area as a hotspot, where significant losses in ecosystem services are observed. The study suggests the need for implementing sustainable, climate-adaptive, and community-based natural resource management strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of land-use changes on ecological stability.
