The Compatible Modes and Functions of Expectation and Anti-expectation Modal Adverbs Within a Sentence
摘要
Expectation and anti-expectation modal adverbs can be compatible with each other within a sentence. The main compatible mode is the collocation of expectation and anti-expectation modal adverbs in the prepredicate position and ‘anti-expectation <expectation>’ vastly outnumbers ‘expectation <anti-expectation>’. This compatible mode implies two compound expectations, ‘speaker’s anti-expectation + other’s expectation’ and ‘speaker’s anti-expectation + speaker’s expectation’, and triggers double expectations. As a reflection of the speaker’s intersubjectivity and ambivalence, what the double commentary of expectation and anti-expectation highlights is the speaker’s anti-expectation, which is related to the fact that anti-expectation modal adverbs are obviously more focus expressive than expectation modal adverbs.
