The robots see red: testing of an intuitive robotic instruction method

This paper documents the testing protocol for two user tests of a robotic instruction method, which through a developed software allows users to instruct robotic fabrication actions through physical drawings made directly on work-pieces. Pre-vious research has documented technical aspects of the method, with functions being tested by a research team. In continuation of this trajectory this paper presents the initial pilot tests, where a total of 26 participants tests the useability of a developed instruction method through robotic fabrication experiments. Each test is evaluated through either semi structured interviews or questionnaires performed before and after each participant used the instruction method. The aim of the research is to identify potentials and limitations of the method before continuing the research and conducting extended user studies with architectural students or other robotic non-specialists. Both tests were performed with ABB IRB 120’s equipped with a spindle and vision system that is connected to a server communicating with a developed software – as a result the robot units can be instructed through 1:1 drawings made directly on workpieces. The user tests led to an ex-tensive physical output ranging from small-scale millings in wood to large aggregate threedimensional surface textures. .
