Materials engineering application in Indian traditional art form yakshagana: exploration with additive manufacturing

Most of the Indian performing arts have deep engineering aspects involved in them. Yakshagana is one of such arts being performed in coastal districts of Karnataka (southern India) and has a history of more than 500 years. Yakshagana is a multidisciplinary and “group performing” art form involving classical music, percussion, dance, expression, acting, dialogue, comedy, costumes, scholarly discussions etc. The most attractive feature of Yakshagana is the use of glittering ornaments, costumes and make-ups. Most of the ornaments currently used in this art are traditionally handmade using soft and light-weight woods. However manual fabrication of these ornaments using wood leads to increasing cost, inconsistency, weight issue, long lead-time, etc. In this work we have explored the application of 3D printing technique in fabricating the Yakshagana ornaments. A detailed design, analysis and fabrication of Yakshagana ornaments using suitable polymer materials (PLA and ABS) employing 3D printing technique is presented. FEM analysis is carried out for one of the main and critical ornaments to understand the force distribution. A comparative study of the traditional method and 3D printing has been carried out to demonstrate the overall efficiency and manufacturing capability of the latter technique. An opportunity for small scale industry development is also proposed.
