摘要
The study examines the partner choice of young people in relation to gender, religious affiliation, strength of religiosity, and interreligious friendships. Friendships play an important role in social and emotional development and can reduce prejudices and promote social cohesion. Partner choice is influenced by various factors, including national/ethnic origin, parental views, and one’s own religiosity. Studies show differences in the willingness to enter interethnic marriages depending on the ethnic group and religious affiliation. Religious boundaries play a role in the decision for a partnership, but love remains the most important factor. The influence of religious factors (religious affiliation, strength of religion and the influence of friendships across religious boundaries) is currently less strongly addressed in studies than ethnic origin.
The study presented here examines the partner choice of young people depending on gender, religious affiliation, strength of religiosity, as well as interreligious friendships. The study surveyed 1090 students aged 18 to 24 in Lower Saxony during the 2017/2018 school year. Most participants were female (59.9%), 68.3% were Christian, 15% had no religious affiliation, and 13% were Muslim. 34.5% of respondents said they had a best friend with the same religious affiliation. Overall, the study shows that friendships, especially interreligious ones, play an important role in reducing prejudices and promoting social cohesion. This is reflected, among other things, in a greater willingness to enter partnerships across religious boundaries; the strength of religiosity, the religious group and gender have a strong moderating influence. Schools and educational programs should therefore support intercultural and interreligious friendships to contribute to a more inclusive society.
