What’s new about the new-antisemitism: Western self-hatred and the offering of Israel
摘要
Accusations against Israel for an unjust war waged on the Palestinians began the very day Hamas viciously massacred over 1200 Israeli civilians. Within a week, even before the IDF’s ground invasion of Gaza, Israel was accused of committing genocide and its very right to exist was questioned. These attacks came not from the extreme, antisemitic Right, but from the radical Left.
In this article I wish to examine the underlying intellectual and cultural currents of some of this animosity from the Left towards the state of Israel, and indeed towards the Jewish people, suggesting it is a new form of antisemitism. While classic, right wing antisemitism, generally sees the Jews as the emblematic other, a pariah people on the periphery of culture posing a threat to “our” purity, the New Antisemitism perceives Judaism not as the West’s other, but as its origin, as the patriarchal, hierarchical, militant, colonialist, exclusivist source of all that’s bad. I will argue that Jews are now seen the purest manifestation of western colonialism and “white” exploitation, necessitating their sacrifice as an atonement for the colonialist sins of western civilization.
