Jüdische Schulbildung im 21. Jahrhundert – Neue Perspektiven auf Frankfurt am Main und Hamburg

The article analyses the opportunities and challenges of Jewish school education in Germany in the 21st century using the example of the I. E. Lichtigfeld School in Frankfurt am Main and the Joseph Carlebach School in Hamburg. Both schools have a heterogeneous student body made up of non-Jewish and Jewish pupils, as well as a broad spectrum of self-conceptions within the Jewish community. Against this background, the article examines the Jewish-religious practices and associated discussions at the schools using the example of kashrut and religious education, and also identifies needs in current Jewish educational work, in particular teaching materials and core curricula for Jewish subjects as well as the recruitment and training of teachers for Hebrew and Jewish religion. The article provides insights into the function and importance of Jewish schools as a secondary socialisation institution that provides knowledge about Jewish religion, history and traditions, offers a Jewish space of experience, and is simultaneously perceived as a safe space that protects against anti-Semitism.
