Optimizing Resource Utilization: Designing A Reverse Circular Logistics Supply Chain Network For The Paper Industry

The paper industry generates significant amounts of waste, including sludge from wastewater treatment, by-products from pulping and bleaching processes, and discarded paper products. Improper disposal of these wastes can pollute soil, water, and air. While the paper industry has made strides in reducing its environmental impact through sustainable forest management, recycling initiatives, and adoption of cleaner technologies, there is still room for improvement to minimize its footprint on the environment. Implementing measures such as increased recycling rates, adoption of alternative fibers, and improved energy efficiency can help mitigate the environmental effects of paper production. The approach proposed by this study is focused on creating a supply chain which adheres to circular principles in order to reduce inappropriate disposal and enhance sustainability. It outlines a sustainable paper production system that integrates multiple manufacturing processes. Key elements include utilizing residual and used items as raw materials, tapping into secondary markets for imperfect items to minimize waste, and optimizing the use of natural resources. The framework also considers expenditures for waste disposal. The feasibility of the suggested structure has been shown numerically, and its practical application and validation are evaluated by means of numerical examples as well as sensitivity analysis of crucial variables.
