Sustainability and Emission Reduction Strategies in Cement Production: a State of the Art

Cement is the foundational element of the construction sector and infrastructure development in countries worldwide, and the cement industry is one of the most prevalent contributors to global warming and environmental deprivation. The state-of-the-art discusses the application of sustainable practices in this sector by considering present-day production systems, the application of recycling, and the condition of the environment in the cement section. It was analyzed from the studies that the enactment of energy-efficient devices, energy management and conservation, proper resource usage, and following recycling materials in the production cycle improved the efficacy of the factories. Furthermore, by integrating Industry 4.0, advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and robotics have enhanced the manufacturing efficiency of the product system and eventually reduced emissions from the production line. This state of the arts highlights the crucial role of sustainability principles in the production system in mitigating environmental impacts and enhancing the system’s functionality. It examines various recycling methods, materials, and emission reduction strategies that are indispensable for balancing ecological health, economic constancy, and societal welfare. The scientific and technological innovations in industries, such as Holcim’s calcined clay cement and waste heat recovery systems, significantly enhance plant efficacy and play a vital role in the sustainable manufacturing of cement. This review also assesses how environmental policies such as the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the Clean Air Act assist in sustainability within the cement industry.
