The Impact of Distance on Commuting Methods and Obesity Rates in Urban Environments: A Case Study of Melbourne, Australia

摘要

The study analyzes statistical data from 309 urban blocks in Melbourne using multivariate spatial clustering and geographically weighted regression methods. The study found that shorter commuting distances in inner areas correlate with higher active commuting rates, such as walking and cycling, which are linked to lower obesity rates. In contrast, outer areas with longer commuting distances show higher reliance on cars and increased obesity, with a model explanatory power of R2 = 0.57 for obesity linked to commuting distance. The study emphasizes the adverse effects of car-centric commuting on urban commuting systems and land use planning and highlights disparities in access to active commuting options. The results suggest that implementing integrated and simultaneous commuting solutions can reduce obesity rates in areas with substantial residential and work distances. This research provides valuable insights for urban commuting planning and public health initiatives.
