<p>While carbonization is the most common means of macrobotanical preservation, botanical remains can also be preserved via desiccation. Although understudied, this type of preservation can occur in historical homes where rodents once stashed plant foods and other organic materials behind walls and under floorboards. An assemblage preserved at Bartram’s Garden (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), the oldest botanic garden in North America, provides an opportunity to apply archaeological methods to rodent-accumulated assemblages and address formation processes, dating, and preservation. We offer methods for interpreting such data sets, including how to collect, subsample, sort, and quantify plant remains. Finally, we discuss how careful interpretation of these data offers information about local vegetation communities associated with cultivated spaces like gardens that typically do not preserve macrobotanical material in soils. We conclude that rodent-cached desiccated materials are worthy of archaeological consideration because they are extremely rich sources of historical botanical data.</p>
