Charleston’s Walled City Project: Collaboration and Collegiality

Throughout history, walls and fortifications were erected to defend one group of people from the incursions of others. With the development of its early fortification system, Charleston, South Carolina, became the only substantial English walled city built in North America. From the 1690s to the 1730s, the walls not only protected a fledgling colony, but they also constricted development, influenced growth, and helped define urban spaces. As threats diminished over the 18th century, Charleston expanded economically and physically, and its defenses were gradually demolished. Ultimately, the history and significance of this walled city was lost to community memory. However, over the last 20 years, there has been renewed public interest as scholars have focused on the city’s early history and defensive landscape. Ironically, the research and investigation of the very walls meant to keep some groups of people away from others has been accomplished through academic collaboration and community support.
