Réginald Auger: “To Me, It Is a Bloom!”—Recollections on Southern Inuit and Martin Frobisher Archaeology in Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada

This article describes archaeological explorations involving Inuit and European history at opposite ends of the eastern Arctic. Réginald Auger’s research in southern Labrador was instrumental in laying the groundwork for my studies of Inuit occupations and culture contact on the Quebec Lower North Shore, and our partnership in the archaeology of the Martin Frobisher voyages (1576–1578) produced the first scientific documentation of Elizabethan explorations in Baffin Island, in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. Auger’s work in both regions carries the distinctive features of his career: creative scholarship, interdisciplinary research, student mentoring, community awareness, humanistic sensibility, and fine field cuisine.
