Clinical advantages of 980-nm diode Laser in maxillary labial frenectomy: a controlled clinical trial

Labial frenectomy is a surgical procedure, in which the frenum, along with its attachments to the periosteum and bone is removed. The purpose of the current study was to compare the 980-nm diode Laser and conventional scalpel technique in maxillary labial frenectomy.
MethodsThirty-two healthy patients with abnormally positioned frenums were enrolled. The participants were matched for gender, age group, and frenum classification. They were equally allocated to either 980-nm diode Laser group or conventional scalpel technique group. Post-operative assessments were carried out at 2–4 days, 10 days, one month, and three months. Intra-operative indices were assessed including difficulty and duration of the procedure, and bleeding. In addition, post-operative indices were evaluated including pain perception, wound healing, edema, scar formation, and amount of attached gingival width gain.
ResultsResults of bleeding index, and procedure duration showed significantly better results in laser’s group when compared with the scalpel group, p-values were 0.00, and 0.007, respectvely. Diode laser group showed significantly lower pain values at the first three timepoints (as p-value was 0.00 for all). At 9–10 days and one-month post-operative evaluation, healing scores did not reveal any significant differences (p-values were 0.083, and 0.878, respectively). Laser group showed significantly better results regarding scar formation after one month (p = 0.022), and three months (p = 0.005).
ConclusionWith the limitations of the current study, the 980-nm Diode laser demonstrated several clinical advantages over the scalpel technique. It reduced the intra-operative bleeding, procedure duration, and post-operative pain and edema, while also improving the scar formation. It is a safe and an effective alternative to the conventional surgical technique.
