摘要

Purpose

To report a minimally invasive treatment approach for a double lip in a patient using a 940 nm diode laser.

Background

Double lip is one of the most common esthetic concerns that affect a patient’s psychology and social life especially at a young age. Double lip is caused by excessive areolar tissue and non-inflammatory labial mucous gland hyperplasia of the pars villosa. When smiling, the lip is retracted, and the mucosa is positioned over the maxillary teeth. For a long time, a surgical approach was recommended despite its high morbidity. A novel surgical alternative approach for treating double lip using a 940 nm diode laser was used in this case report.

Case report

A 22-year-old male patient was presented with a double lip. Upon examination, an extra bulk of the upper lip was observed when the patient held his lips apart. On smiling and stretching, a clear demarcated extra bulk of the upper lip was seen. A 940-nm diode laser in continuous wave mode and with a power of 2.0 W was used for the excision. The procedure was performed under local anesthesia with no bleeding or post-operative complications reported.

Conclusion

The treatment approach using a 940 nm diode laser was effective in providing predictable outcomes for the treatment of a double lip with minimal bleeding, uneventful healing, and minimal postoperative pain.
